IRIS 2.0 FBR Portal: New Features & Navigation Guide 2026FBR Updates

If you have ever opened the FBR portal, stared at the screen and wondered where the "file return" button went, you are not alone. Most Pakistani taxpayers feel the same on their first visit.

The good news is that IRIS 2.0 is much easier once someone shows you the layout. This guide does exactly that. You will learn what changed, how the menus work, how to log in, file, pay and fix errors. I have also added the mistakes I see taxpayers repeat every year.

One timing note. As of today, September 20, 2026, the usual individual filing deadline is 30 September. That is ten days away. If you have not filed yet, read the login and filing sections first and come back for the rest later.

What Is the IRIS 2.0 FBR Portal?

IRIS 2.0 is the upgraded online tax portal of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in Pakistan, built by Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL). Taxpayers use it to register for an NTN, file income tax and wealth statements, pay tax through ePayment, and read FBR notices from one login.

IRIS stands for Inland Revenue Information System. Some websites write it as "Integrated" instead. The official portal address is iris.fbr.gov.pk, and the wider FBR website is fbr.gov.pk.

Think of IRIS 2.0 as your personal tax office that never closes. You can see your profile, your returns, your payments and your notices without visiting a Regional Tax Office (RTO).

If you want the full background on the system, our guide on what the FBR IRIS portal is covers it in plain language.

Why IRIS 2.0 Matters for Pakistani Taxpayers

Filing a return is not just a legal duty. It decides how much tax you pay every day on ordinary transactions.

Filers appear on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL). Non-filers usually face higher withholding tax on bank transactions, property purchases, vehicle registration and more. You can read the details in our guide to FBR withholding tax rates in Pakistan.

So the portal is not a technical detail. It is the gateway to your filer status. Knowing how to use it saves you money, penalties and stress.

Here is why it matters more each year:

  • FBR is pushing everything online, from returns to notices.
  • Third-party data from banks, utilities and property records is used to cross-check what you declare.
  • Late filing costs you your ATL status, and getting it back can cost extra.

To understand how FBR spots mismatches, read about the FBR Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS).

When Was IRIS 2.0 Launched and Why?

FBR launched IRIS 2.0 in July 2023 as an upgraded version of the tax filing system developed by PRAL. The earlier versions, IRIS 1.0 and 1.1, struggled with performance during peak loads and needed costly hardware.

That history explains the upgrade. Every year, thousands of taxpayers log in during the last week of September. Older versions slowed down or timed out just when people needed them most.

You can read the original report in Dawn's coverage of the IRIS 2.0 launch.

What's New in IRIS 2.0? Major Upgrades over the Legacy Portal

Let's start with the big picture. IRIS 2.0 changed both the engine (back end) and the dashboard (front end).

A Cleaner Dashboard with One Login for Everything

The new dashboard puts your main tasks in one place. Registration, declarations, payments and messages sit behind a left-hand menu. You no longer hunt through crowded pages to find a single option.

Your existing NTN, filing history and login carry over. You do not need a new NTN just because the portal changed.

Simple way to think about it: IRIS 2.0 rebuilt the shop front, not the warehouse. Your records are still where they were.

Better Speed and Stability

The main goal of the 2.0 rebuild was handling heavy traffic better. FBR described the upgrade as a major transformation, with stronger back-end work and an easier front-end design.

Does it still slow down near the deadline? Sometimes, yes. Every government portal does. But the experience is generally smoother than the old versions, especially if you avoid the last two days.

Mobile-Friendly Layout

You can open IRIS 2.0 on a phone browser, and the layout adapts to the screen. Some taxpayers also use the Tax Asaan app for basic tasks. Still, for filing a return with a wealth statement, I strongly suggest a laptop. Small screens make reconciliation mistakes much more likely.

For more on how these upgrades play out in real filing season, see our FBR IRIS 2.0 survival guide for tax season.

Standout New Features in IRIS 2.0

Self-Service Account Recovery

This is a big one. Not long ago, a forgotten password often meant a trip to the RTO.

FBR added an Account Recovery option alongside Forgot Password, so users can reset access with a registered mobile number, even one not linked earlier.

That single change saves many taxpayers a day of queues.

Tighter New Registration Rules

New registrants now have to provide their CNIC, CNIC expiry date, date of birth and full name.

This reduces verification failures later. Have your CNIC in front of you when you register, and make sure the details match exactly.

ePayment 2.0 Inside the Workflow

You can generate a PSID (Payment Slip ID) from the Payments menu and pay through your bank app, online banking or other approved channels. After payment, a CPR (Computerised Payment Receipt) is created as proof.

We explain this fully in the payment section below.

Digital Notices and Correspondence

FBR notices now appear inside your account. You can read them, track deadlines and reply from the portal. That is convenient. It also means you must log in regularly, because a missed digital notice is still a missed notice.

Third-Party Data and Compliance Checks

FBR receives data from banks, utility companies, vehicle registries and property authorities. You should assume FBR can see much of your financial footprint.

I would not promise you a "pre-filled" return. What you see on screen can vary by category and year. What I can say is this: declare what you own and earn honestly, because mismatches get flagged. Our post on the FBR artificial intelligence tax filing system explains where this is heading.

IRIS 1.0 vs IRIS 1.1 vs IRIS 2.0: A Quick Comparison

I have skipped the table and kept this as short quotes so it reads easily on your phone. Details on the older versions are limited, so I have kept this to what is well documented.

IRIS 1.0: The original online system. It moved returns from paper to the web, but it struggled as more people filed.
IRIS 1.1: An improved follow-up. It still faced performance issues at peak times and needed heavy hardware.
IRIS 2.0: A rebuilt system with a friendlier dashboard, better stability, digital notices, integrated ePayment and self-service account recovery.

If you also hear people mention "eFBR", our comparison of eFBR vs the IRIS tax portal clears up the confusion.

How to Log In to the IRIS 2.0 FBR Portal (Step by Step)

Login problems cause more panic than any tax law. Let's fix that.

  1. Open your browser and type iris.fbr.gov.pk directly. Do not use links from random social media posts.
  2. Enter your registered username (usually your CNIC or NTN, as set up on your account).
  3. Type your password carefully. It is case-sensitive.
  4. Enter the captcha exactly as shown.
  5. Click Login. If asked, complete the OTP or verification step sent to your registered mobile or email.
  6. You will land on your dashboard.

Quick tips for a smooth login:

  • Use an updated Chrome or Edge browser.
  • Keep only one IRIS tab open. Multiple tabs cause session conflicts.
  • Clear your cache if the page behaves strangely.
  • Do not share your password or PIN with agents you do not trust.

For a longer walkthrough, see our FBR IRIS login guide for Pakistan.

How to Register on IRIS 2.0 as a New Taxpayer

New to tax filing? You need an NTN first. Registration is free.

  1. On the IRIS home page, click New Registration.
  2. Choose the taxpayer type, for example individual.
  3. Enter your CNIC, CNIC expiry date, date of birth and full name exactly as printed on your ID card.
  4. Provide a mobile number and email that you actually use. Your PIN code and OTPs arrive there.
  5. Complete the verification steps and set a strong password.
  6. Save your login details and your PIN code somewhere safe.

Your NTN is generated once registration is complete. If you want the full process with screenshots and documents, read how to get an NTN number in Pakistan. To check an existing NTN, use our guide to checking an NTN with a CNIC online.

Practical tip: Register with a mobile SIM registered in your own name. This makes OTP delivery and later account recovery far easier.

Step-by-Step Navigation: How to Use the IRIS 2.0 Interface

Menu names can shift slightly when FBR updates the portal, so confirm labels on your live screen. The layout logic stays the same.

The Dashboard Overview

After login, your dashboard shows your profile summary and quick links. Your main menu sits on the left side of the screen. Read it top to bottom once, and it starts to make sense.

The Left-Sidebar Menu Explained

Here is what each area is generally used for:

Home / Dashboard. Your starting point. It gives a quick view of your account and recent activity.

Registration. Used to update your profile, add or change contact details, and manage registration-related services. If you need to change your email or mobile number, look here first.

Declaration. The most important menu for individuals. This is where you file your income tax return and wealth statement. You can also view previously filed returns and start a revised return.

Payments (ePayment). Used to generate a PSID, view payment history and find your CPR.

Refund. Used if you are claiming a tax refund. Our guide on claiming a tax refund from FBR explains the process.

Inbox / Messages. Where FBR sends notices and messages. Check this often during filing season.

e-Enrollment. Used by certain taxpayers and businesses for additional service enrollments.

Profile Settings. For your personal details, security settings and account information.

A good habit: Once a month, log in and open your Inbox. It takes two minutes and can save you from a missed deadline.

How to Find Your Filed Return

  1. Log in and open Declaration.
  2. Select your filed return list or return history.
  3. Choose the tax year.
  4. View or download your return and acknowledgement.

Keep a PDF copy of every return on your computer and in cloud storage. Banks, embassies and property offices often ask for it.

How to File Your Income Tax Return on IRIS 2.0

This is the part most people came for. I will keep it practical.

Before You Start: Gather Your Documents

Have these ready:

  • CNIC, NTN and your IRIS login
  • Salary certificate or salary slips for the year
  • Employer's tax deduction details
  • Bank profit certificates and tax deduction certificates
  • Rental agreements and rent receipts, if you earn rent
  • Business records, if self-employed
  • Property, vehicle, bank balance, investment and loan details for your wealth statement

For a broader checklist, see how to file an income tax return in Pakistan.

Which Tax Year Am I Filing?

For Tax Year 2026, you report income earned from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. The deadline for individuals and AOPs is 30 September 2026, while companies generally have until 31 December 2026.

We have a dedicated FBR income tax return deadline 2026 guide that covers penalties and the ATL surcharge.

The Filing Steps

  1. Log in to IRIS 2.0.
  2. Open Declaration and choose the income tax return for your category.
  3. Select Tax Year 2026.
  4. Enter your income by head: salary, business, property, capital gains or other sources.
  5. Enter tax already deducted (withholding tax) so you receive credit for it.
  6. Move on to the wealth statement section.
  7. Review the tax computation the portal shows.
  8. If tax is still due, generate a PSID, pay, and attach the payment details as prompted.
  9. Enter your PIN code when asked and submit.
  10. Download your acknowledgement and a copy of the filed return.

Not sure how much you owe? Try our free salary income tax calculator first. Salaried readers may also like our post on income tax slabs for salaried persons in Pakistan.

If you have more than one source of income, read our multiple income sources FBR tax rules guide before you start.

How Long Does Filing Take?

A simple salaried return can take under an hour if your documents are ready. A return with rental income, business income and many assets takes longer. Never leave it to the last day.

How to File a Wealth Statement in IRIS 2.0

The wealth statement lists what you own and owe. It sits under Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, and it is where most submission errors happen.

Include:

  • Bank accounts and cash
  • Property and land
  • Vehicles
  • Investments and business assets
  • Loans and liabilities

The key idea is wealth reconciliation. Your assets at the end of the year should match your assets at the start, plus your income and savings, minus expenses and liabilities. If the numbers do not balance, the portal will flag it.

Rule of thumb: If your wealth reconciliation does not show a zero difference, do not submit. Find the gap first.

Our full walkthrough, wealth statement filing on IRIS for tax year 2026, covers common mismatches like undeclared gifts and foreign remittances.

How to Pay Tax Through ePayment: PSID and CPR Explained

What Is a PSID?

A PSID (Payment Slip ID) is a unique number the portal creates for your payment. Your bank or payment app uses it to send tax to the right account.

What Is a CPR?

A CPR (Computerised Payment Receipt) is your proof of payment. Keep it safe.

How to Generate a PSID

  1. Log in and open the Payments menu.
  2. Choose to create a new payment slip.
  3. Select the tax type, tax year and amount.
  4. Generate the PSID and note it down.
  5. Pay using online banking, a mobile app or another approved channel. Some Alternate Delivery Channels (ADC) also accept these payments.
  6. Return to the Payments menu later to view payment history and download your CPR.

Common payment problems:

  • Payment not showing. Give it some time, then check payment history again. Keep your bank receipt.
  • PSID not generated. Check the tax head and year, and try again in a cleaner browser session.
  • CPR not received. Confirm the payment is successful with your bank first, then recheck.

Checking Notices and Your Active Taxpayer List Status

FBR Notices

Notices arrive in your inbox. Read each one fully. Do not ignore it because it looks scary. Many are routine requests for information.

Our guide to FBR tax notices explained helps you understand what each type means. If it is an audit notice, read how to respond to an FBR audit notice before you reply.

Checking Filer Status

Your name on the Active Taxpayer List shows you are a filer. FBR publishes it, and you can check it online. See our step-by-step post on how to check the FBR Active Taxpayer List (ATL). If you are not on it yet, read how to become an active tax filer in Pakistan.

How to Revise a Return You Already Filed

Made a mistake? You can usually revise a return, but the rules and time limits matter. In simple terms:

  1. Log in and open Declaration.
  2. Find the filed return for the correct tax year.
  3. Choose the option to revise.
  4. Correct the figures and resubmit with your PIN.

Do this soon after you spot the error. Our detailed guide on how to revise an income tax return on IRIS walks through the conditions.

How to Reset Your IRIS 2.0 Password or Recover Your Account

  1. On the login page, click Forgot Password.
  2. Enter the details the portal asks for.
  3. Complete OTP verification on your registered mobile or email.
  4. Set a new password.

If your mobile is not linked, use the Account Recovery option. It lets you verify with a registered mobile number, which removes the need to visit the RTO in many cases.

If you also forgot your PIN code, look for the PIN recovery option in your profile or login help. If it is not available for your account type, contact FBR support. The FBR helpline is 111-772-772.

Troubleshooting Common IRIS 2.0 Problems

Login Failures and Captcha Errors

  • Retype the captcha slowly.
  • Use one tab only.
  • Clear cache and cookies, then retry.
  • Try a different browser.

Session Expired

The portal logs you out after inactivity. Work in short bursts, and save often. Do not leave a half-filled return open while you go for lunch.

OTP or PIN Code Not Received

  • Check your registered mobile number and signal.
  • Check email spam folders.
  • Wait a minute before requesting a new code, since repeated requests can delay delivery.
  • If your number is outdated, use Account Recovery or update your contact details.

Server Slow or Down

This happens most in the final days before the deadline. Try early morning or late night. File days earlier if you can.

Errors While Submitting the Return

Usually one of these:

  • A wealth reconciliation difference
  • A missing required field
  • A mismatch between income and tax credits
  • An incorrect PIN

Fix the flagged section first, then submit again. We collected more fixes in FBR IRIS login problems and solutions.

Account Locked

Too many wrong attempts can lock your account. Wait, then use Forgot Password or Account Recovery. Do not keep guessing.

Best Practices for a Stress-Free Filing Season

  • File early. Do it in the first weeks after the portal opens, not in the last week.
  • Gather paperwork first. Half of all delays come from missing certificates.
  • Save everything. Download the return, acknowledgement, PSID and CPR.
  • Use a laptop. It is safer for long forms.
  • Protect your credentials. Never share your password, OTP or PIN.
  • Check the FBR website. Confirm dates on fbr.gov.pk instead of relying on forwarded messages.
  • Do not depend on extensions. In 2025, FBR first said the deadline would not move and then extended it to October 15. That kind of back-and-forth is risky to plan around.

New to the season? Our FBR open tax year 2026 filing guide shows what changed this time.

Where to Get Help: FBR Offices in Major Cities

You can do most things online, but sometimes you need a person. Here is a quick guide.

  • Islamabad: The FBR Head Office is in Islamabad, and the Regional Tax Office (RTO) handles local taxpayers.
  • Karachi: Karachi has both an RTO and a Large Taxpayers Office (LTO).
  • Lahore: Lahore also has an RTO and an LTO.
  • Multan: The Multan RTO serves taxpayers in the region.

For general help, call the FBR helpline at 111-772-772. For disputes about how the tax system treated you, you can approach the Federal Tax Ombudsman. For company business, the PRAL website has technical background on the portal.

If you would rather learn to do this yourself, we teach it in person. Explore our FBR income tax course in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore.
